Keeping Healthy Habits

Congrats to all of you!! What an accomplishment completing this challenge is. (Trust me, I completely slacked off in the last couple weeks!)

The challenge ends tomorrow – {remember, no potluck} – but the real challenge is continuing your healthy lifestyle! Which healthy habits do you plan on keeping? Maybe you will continue to floss (it’ll make Dr. Zizi happy!), or you’ll want to make sure you get at least 7 hours of sleep (if you’re not a parent of a toddler), or maybe you’ll continue to work out and cut out junk food… Small changes can make a huge difference.
I won’t be posting any final results until our awards banquet on Monday, March 2nd. Having it on March 2nd will give us enough time to get all the weekly sheets in and totals tallied and prizes finalized. The dinner will be around 5:15pm at the NTC Subsistence Building (across from the school up the hill behind Rod ‘n Real Charters) and it will be catered by Tiffany Stonecipher. If anyone has dietary restrictions, please email or talk to me within the week. The awards banquet is just for the challenge finishers – sorry, no plus-ones or plus-fives…
Thank you all for participating in my 6th annual VV Challenge. It’s been so fun having so many dedicated people! If you have any suggestions on how to make the challenge even better next year, send me an email!

Take It One Day at a Time

Wow, I had a bit of a VV Blog fail this week! I completely spaced it. So, now we’re almost in our last week! I can’t believe how quickly this challenge has gone by. Thank you all for sticking with it so far – only one week to go. Let’s take this one day at a time! Since we’re in the last stretch, now is the time to push ourselves even a little bit more! R

How are you all doing so far? I’ve had a rough week trying to stay motivated, but I’m trying to take it one day at a time and try to do better each day. How about you? I see a lot of you bettering yourselves each day – and I’m so proud of each of you! You should be proud too.
See you tomorrow at 5pm for the potluck!!

In The Thick of the Challenge

just a bit more
I can’t believe how quickly this challenge is flying by! It’s hard to believe we’re already past the halfway mark. This just shows to go (yeah, I say it backwards…on purpose…) how relatively short-lived this challenge is, and how we need to continue to push ourselves (and each other!) until the bitter end. Be wary of injuring yourself, of course, but in these next couple weeks try to up your game a bit. Increase your speeds or levels on the cardio equipment, or try some more challenging core exercises, or try holding your plank for just 2 seconds longer! Also – try to do more than the bare minimum to get your points… try to challenge yourself just a little bit more.

Those of you doing Tammy’s boot camp – congrats and great job! – and you can get a strength point for doing the class. All those body weight exercises that she’s got you doing should count for something, right? Also, if you warm up before class on a cardio machine but don’t reach 20 minutes, get back on after class and finish to get your point!

**This Week**
Core: 80 reps (Vary your moves! Try bicycles, flutter kicks, bosu ball crunches, etc. See below for some variations and standing exercises – use with weights or without)
Pushups: 16 minimum
Plank: Should be holding it at least 15 seconds longer than you did when we began!
Potluck: We changed the time to 5:00 for the rest of the potlucks! February 2nd and 9th will be at 5:00 in the yoga room, to accommodate those in boot camp. You can arrive when you can, whether it’s at 5 or 5:15. The final day of the challenge is the 16th, and we won’t have a potluck that day. We’ll be having a nice final banquet at the NTC Subsistence Building, catered by Tiffany! Yum! We’ll talk about the date for that at our upcoming potlucks.

Keep it up! We’re on the home stretch!!

Creating Healthy Habits

I have sat down to write this blog post so many times yesterday and today and kept getting sidetracked and busy! Life just gets in the way sometimes – or work…it gets in the way too. But I digress.
I’ve been taking this new year bull by the horns, so to speak. I’ve been exercising regularly, remembering to take vitamins and supplements, and eating fairly clean. But I have been regularly wishing I was eating Rosco’s {insert favorite Rosco’s food here} instead of the baked chicken and veggies I was choking down. But they say it takes 21 days to form a habit. So here we are… 21 days into 2015 and I don’t know about you, but I’m actually starting to enjoy this new, healthy lifestyle! Yes, some days are tougher than others to stay on track, but then the scale goes down a smidge, or my pants aren’t feeling as tight around my belly, or I actually don’t crave dessert, and all the healthy choices I’ve made are finally worth it.
How are you all doing with your healthy lifestyle changes? We are almost 21 days into our challenge – these may just become healthy habits! I am extremely motivated and encouraged by all the active participation this year.
What can we do to keep up the intensity? Maybe a halfway prize will help… At Monday’s potluck, everyone who attends will be entered to win Club swag! (There may even be multiple prizes…you’ll just have to be there to find out!) Nothing beats new workout clothes (besides new shoes – those are reeeeally important to have to avoid injury).

Closed Monday

Just a reminder that the Club will be closed tomorrow (Monday) which means no gym points for anyone and no potluck. And – I haven’t heard back from many people about the Potluck time on Tuesday (choose either during yoga at 5:15 or after yoga at 6:15). Please vote on the previous post. I’ll announce the time that the majority votes for tomorrow evening. Thanks!

If It Doesn’t Challenge You, It Doesn’t Change You

We made it through our first week! Congrats! I am very encouraged by how motivated everyone is so far. Let’s keep up the intensity!

It’s time to turn in your check sheets for the first week. We can even tally them up for you! I’ll get something posted with weekly results once I get more sheets turned in. Something to keep in mind: this is a challenge. Remember to push yourself – only as hard as you should be pushing yourself. Increase your elevation on the treadmill, increase your level on the elliptical, try intervals where you only push yourself for short bursts… These points should be difficult to be getting – try not to just go through the motions. This week we start increasing with our Core (40), Pushups (12), and Plank (Add 5 seconds). These numbers are the minimum! I’ve seen a lot of you increasing your plank each time, or adding a pushup each day – that is great! Keep pushing. Your only competition is yourself.  if it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you

We are closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so the potluck will be on Tuesday, as I said at the potluck. Buuuut, I completely forgot about our yoga class at that time! So, I’ve put together a poll to ask when you think we should do the potluck. We can keep it at 5:15 on Tuesday, which is during yoga. As long as we are pretty quiet, it shouldn’t be a problem. OR we can have the potluck at 6:15 that night, right after yoga. This way, the food smell and the sound of us visiting won’t disrupt the class, and if anyone in the challenge wants to go to yoga, they wouldn’t have to choose between the two – and that person could get 2 points for going to both. Elise and I are fine with either time, but I want to put it out there to see which time works for the majority of you. So, vote here:

What is Junk Food?
junk_food_definitionI find myself saying things to justify my unhealthy eating like “but it’s organic” or “they’re veggie chips, so they’re not really chips” – well, you get the picture. But deep down I know I shouldn’t be eating all the processed, fat-free, or sugar-free junk. I’ve actually gotten a lot of points for not eating junk food this past week – how are you doing with that?

How are you feeling about the challenge so far? Too easy? 😉 Too difficult? What’s working for you?

Welcome 2015 Challengers

imageThanks all for joining our challenge! I put a lot into this challenge each year and love to see people having fun competing for the coveted title of ‘Vinter Vigglov Champion!’

We use this blog to encourage each other and keep in touch with each other. We’re happy to have the Monday potlucks back – we missed the comaraderie last year – and we love all the yummy food! This year you don’t get points for submitting recipes, but please do! I’ll be putting together some sort of cookbook with all the recipes, so if you have any you’d like to share, just email them to

Also, if anyone wants to get their starting measurements, just let me know. Sometimes doing a challenge like this will help you tone your muscles and trim down without losing weight. Not losing weight can be very discouraging (don’t I know!) but seeing your measurements decrease is such a boost!

Leave a comment here and let us know what you plan to achieve during these 6 short weeks. Would you like to lose weight, get stronger, make some friends…? Share with us your goals.

Thanks again and good luck!
