Eco Wellness Points

Share how you earned your eco-wellness points each week by commenting below.

Recycle, pick up roadside trash, avoid disposable plastic, turn your thermostats down, make your home more energy efficient, compost, use a low-flow shower head, turn off unnecessary lights and electronics… There are so many things to do!

Note: in prior years, you were able to get a point for not using any plastic bottles. We have changed that this year – it was too easy! We need to challenge ourselves more. 🙂

the first week, I earned my eco wellness point by not purchasing or using any plastic water bottles. interestingly enough, as I was beachcombing last year with Mark across the bay the item seen most were plastic water bottles – tons of them!! I enjoy my own tap water with a squeeze of fresh lemon.

Awesome, Susan! That is disheartening to find so many plastic bottles on the beach…ugh. So sad. I am constantly buying bottled water when I’m out, and I feel guilty about it (but it’s better than soda, right?) – but at home, my tap water is so good! And we have big bottled water at the Club that everyone is welcome to drink when you’re here!

I restrained from using any plastic water bottles (or juice or soda, even) again this week. I’ve been filling one from the house and drinking it that way. Our water is a little iron-y but I just squeeze a bit of crystal light or mia flavoring in it and you don’t taste the iron.

Unfortunately with surgery and traveling because of it this week I was unable to avoid plastic water bottles. However, my boyfriend and I did go over our electric usage because we realized our electricity keeps skyrocketing. While figuring out how to save on electricity we found some problems within our home that, once fixed, will conserve energy in a major way.

This week I made an effort not to waste any food. We ate simply what we had on hand and we used up all of our leftovers. The only thing that I did buy from the grocery store was bananas!

We have been recycling for a long time now. We recycle our newspapers, plastic, glass jars and bottles, aluminum, and have been composting for almost a year now. The lack of snow has made it easy for this become the wooden compost box that Mike built would be piled with snow by now. Last winter we kept a metal garbage can near the porch to put all our compost. I am trying to impact our kids and have been known to dig aluminum cans, plastic bottles, etc. out of their garbage’s to recycle. I also dig it out of my own garbage if my company throws it in there. I won’t be around as long as my grandkids and I want a healthy world for them:)

For my eco point I’m proud to say that my husband made us a compost bin. I started saving all my veggie and fruit scraps this week. Yea!

There are times that I feel like just throwing that glass jar or plastic jar in the trash because I don’t feel like washing it out to put in the recycle bin. I know how important it is to recycle, so I wash it and put it in the recycle bin. It is especially hard to not want to throw those salad dressing bottles into the garbage, but I wash them and put them in the recycle bin. It has gotten easier and easier to recycle. I want my grandchildren and other people’s grandchildren to have a clean environment to live in, so that is why I recycle:)

This week I allowed my kids to do some art projects with recycled toys, pieces of toys, bows, beads, broken, jewelry. They made some pretty cool stuff and it didn’t cost a dime.

This last week we switched to heating our house with wood all week. With this warm weather we’ve had we saved on fuel and actually had to burn very little wood. It definitely put a nice peaceful vibe in our home this week as well.
